May weather was typical for Greene County, according to volunteer weather observer John Beltz.
Beltz reported a total of 4.16 inches of rain; normal is 4.14 inches. Temperatures were also very close to normal, with the average high temperate 72.2 degree, compared to the normal 72.4 degrees, and the average low temperature 48.6 degrees, compared to the normal 48.3 degrees.
Low temperature during May in Jefferson was 34 degrees on May 16 and May 17. The temperature topped 90 degrees just once; high temperature for May 8 was 92 degrees. That came just eight days after the coolest day of the month. On May 1, high temperature was 43 degrees. There were eight days in May when the temperature was 80 degrees or warmer, and nine nights when the temperature was 40 degrees or colder.
The record high temperature in Jefferson for May is 104 degrees on May 30, 1934.The record low temperature is 19 degrees on May 4, 1907, and on Ma 2, 1961.
Beltz reported rainfall on 14 days in May. The most precipitation was 2.67 inches during the 24 hours from 6 am Sunday, May 11 (Mother’s Day) to Monday, May 12. He noted thunder on seven days; on two of those days Jefferson received no rain.
